A watermark is a line of text across the page that tells the reader what the document is: a draft, a confidential file or a copy meant for one person. Add Watermark puts it on every page in a few clicks.

Common watermark texts

  • DRAFT for documents that are not final.
  • CONFIDENTIAL for internal reports and client material.
  • SAMPLE or PREVIEW for work you show before it is paid for.
  • A recipient name, so you know who a copy was sent to.

Step by step

  1. Open Add Watermark and add your PDF.
  2. Type the watermark text. Short words look best.
  3. Choose strength: Light, Medium or Strong.
  4. Choose Diagonal or Straight.
  5. Press Add watermark and download the marked copy.

Light, Medium or Strong?

Light keeps the page easy to read and is good for drafts. Medium is a good default for confidential files. Strong cannot be missed, which suits samples and previews. A diagonal watermark covers more of the page, while a straight one is calmer.

Limits to know about

The tool adds text only, not logos. Use plain English letters and numbers. A watermark is a visible deterrent, not security, so for sensitive files also limit who you send them to.

Combine with other tools

Add a date or reference with Add Text to PDF, sign the final copy with Sign PDF and number the pages with Add Page Numbers. Keep an unmarked original in a safe place.

Privacy

The watermark is added inside your browser. The document is not uploaded.
