Some PDFs open without a problem but will not let you print, copy text or change anything. That is a permissions limit, and for your own files you can remove it with Unlock PDF.

Two kinds of PDF protection

Open password. The file asks for a password before it shows anything. No online tool should be able to bypass this without the password, and ours does not.

Permissions. The file opens freely, but printing, copying or editing is switched off. This is the limit the tool removes.

How to unlock

  1. Open Unlock PDF and add your file.
  2. Press Unlock PDF.
  3. Wait while each page is redrawn. Longer files take a little more time.
  4. Download the new copy and print or share it as needed.

What changes in the new file

To remove the limits, each page is redrawn as a sharp image and saved into a new PDF. The pages look the same, but the text is part of the picture, so it cannot be selected. If you need the words, use PDF to Text on the original where it has real text.

Use it responsibly

Only unlock files you own or have the right to change. The tool is meant for situations such as an old document of your own whose settings you no longer control, not for bypassing someone else's protection.

Next steps

Once a file is unlocked, you can combine it with others using Merge PDF. If a file will not open at all, read our guide on how to fix it with Repair PDF.

Privacy

The conversion happens in your browser. Your document is not uploaded while its limits are being removed.
